A home loan is one of the most tax-efficient debt instruments in India. By understanding the applicable sections of the Income Tax Act, you can substantially offset your loan servicing costs.
### 1. Section 24(b) - Interest Deduction up to ₹2 Lakhs
For a self-occupied property, you can claim up to ₹2,00,000 per financial year against the interest component paid on your home loan.
### 2. Section 80C - Principal Repayment up to ₹1.5 Lakhs
You can claim up to ₹1,50,000 under Section 80C for the principal portion of your EMI paid during the year, alongside registration charges and stamp duty.
### 3. Joint Home Loans - Double the Benefits
If you take a joint home loan with your spouse or parent, both co-borrowers can claim separate deductions under Section 24(b) (up to ₹2L each = ₹4 Lakhs) and Section 80C (up to ₹1.5L each = ₹3 Lakhs), totaling up to ₹7 Lakhs in combined tax relief!
